Galatians 4:4-5 "But when the fullness of the time had come, Elohim (G-d) sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the Law, to redeem those who were under the Law, that we might receive the adoption as sons."
We were taught that Yeshua (Jesus) was born "under the Law" and that was a "bad" thing. We were taught even more - that the Law was burdensome, made you into a "legalistic" person and that Yeshua actually died so that we wouldn't have to follow the Law anymore.
Sorry, but this is just not true. Please read on and see why I say this so boldly.
1. Yeshua was born a Jew (from the lineage of the tribe of Judah). So, yes He was born "under the Law". He was "born" into Elohim's chosen people - the Hebrew people (12 tribes to be exact).
2. Not only was He born "under" the Law but He IS THE LAW. John 1:1 'In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with Elohim, and the Word was Elohim." Yeshua is the WORD. The WORD is TORAH. Torah is Scripture (the first five books of the Bible).
3. Yeshua did not come to destroy the Torah - He came to complete it - to teach it in it's fullness. All Rabbis strive to complete the Torah. Which means they taught disciples how to correctly or completely follow the Law (Torah). Matthew 5:17-18 “Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill (complete). For assuredly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle will by no means pass from the law till all is fulfilled." Has heaven and earth passed away? If not then the Law is still in effect according to the Messiah.
4. The Law is not "bad". In fact Shaul (Paul) says this: Romans 7:12 "Therefore the Law is holy, and the commandment holy and just and good." Yeshua is good. The Law is good. Simple.
5. Yeshua's death did not "cancel" the Law or add to it. If it did then He changed Scripture, and the Word is Eternal and can not be changed. Deuteronomy 12:32 “Whatever I command you, be careful to observe it; you shall not add to it nor take away from it." That's an eternal command - no one can add or subtract from the Torah.
So, you see it really is very wonderful. Yeshua was born a Jew, under the Law and that was a very good thing. He came to redeem His people, because just like us they were "straying" away from the Truth. The Hebrew word is "Teshuvah" or return to HaShem (G-d). He came to teach the Torah correctly and bring people back to the Truth - so that they could follow and live with Him forever. Luke 11:28 "But He (Yeshua) said, “Far more blessed are those who hear the Word (Torah) of Elohim (G-d) and obey it!”
In Galatians 4:4 the Greek word for "under" is "hupo" which means "under authority" or "working directly as a subordinate" (Strong's 5259). Yeshua was born under the authority of the Law. He followed it completely and taught it completely. He was sinless and NEVER disobeyed the Law. Remember He is the Law. He is the Torah. Born under the Torah.
